Karim Benzema will stand trial for his alleged involvement in an attempt to blackmail former France teammate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.
According to reports in France, prosecutors in Versailles on Thursday confirmed the French striker and four others are set to appear before a judge.
Benzema, who has vehemently denied all accusations, was charged in 2015 in relation to the case.
“The decision to take this to trial is absurd and unfair”, Sylvian Cormier, his lawyer told EFE. “Benzema doesn’t have anything to be blamed for”.
Paul-Albert Iweins, Valbuena’s counsel, told L’Equipe the decision was “the logical continuation of the instruction which perfectly established the participation of the various people”.
Karim Benzema has since been exiled from the France national team because of the situation.
