News York, USA, (CNB News) – New York has reported 731 new deaths from the coronavirus, the highest overnight jump since the beginning of the outbreak, taking its total number of fatalities to 5, 489.

More than 730 additional people died from COVID-19, Cuomo reported during his daily press briefing, but noted that the number is a “lagging indicator” of the outbreak. He also said that the three-day average of hospitalizations is falling.

A global pandemic of the novel coronavirus has now killed at least 11,018 people in the United States.

The U.S. has more cases than any other country, with over 369,000 people diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Worldwide, more than 1.36 million people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and over 76,500 of them have died since the virus emerged in China in December. The actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some governments are hiding the scope of their nations’ outbreaks.

Italy has the world’s highest death toll — over 16,500.
